Symptoms for a failing hot water heater:

A simple symptom your hot water heater is not heating water or sometimes your hot water heater is just not delivering enough hot water through the hot water distribution system.  If your hot water heater has a circulation pump, it could possibly be a reason why you are not getting enough hot water.  

Other symptoms for your hot water heater failure could possibly be due to the age of your hot water heater.  It also could be due to failing parts in your hot water heater.  The following are symptoms of your hot water heater, possibly needing a hot water repair or replacement:
  • A leak on the hot water heater cold line
  • A leak on the hot water heater hot line
  • Your hot water heater could have a leaking pressure relief valve
  • The hot water heater discharge line from the relief valve is leaking
  • If the relief valve on your hot water heater looks old, rusted or is leaking, 
 CALL FOR SERVICE.  
 This could be a potentially dangerous situation with regards to your hot  water heater.
If your cold water shut off valve on your hot water heater looks old, rusty or is leaking, this valve should be replaced.  Why?  If your hot water heater was to break, this valve can be very important in stopping the flow of water coming out of your hot water heater.  Repairs should be made as soon as possible.

In minimizing damage from your hot water heater, any leak at the top of your hot water heater can be potentially dangerous.  Why?  Electrical connections for your hot water heater are usually on top.  If this is happening to your hot water heater, SHUT OFF and CALL FOR SERVICE.

Sometimes you will find water around the hot water heater or coming from the bottom of your hot water heater.  When this happens, your hot water heater probably has a ruptured tank and needs a hot water heater replacement.  

If your hot water heater has water coming from any side panels, your hot water heater could possibly have a leaking or ruptured tank.  This also could be that the control parts are faulty on your hot water heater.  
Gas hot water heaters have many of the same symptoms as an electrical hot water heater, plus a few more.
  • If your gas hot water heater’s burner will not go on
  • If your gas hot water heater is not heating water
  • If your gas hot water heater’s pilot will not stay lit
  • If your gas hot water heater has any of these symptoms or if you smell gas, CALL FOR SERVICE IMMEDIATELY!
Importance of safety devices and controls on your hot water heater

Your hot water heater has some important safety devices and controls.  Hot water heater pressure and temperature relief valves are very important safety devices on your hot water heater.  It senses your hot water heater’s temperature and pressure.  If the pressure on your hot water heater goes above 150 psi, this valve is made to open.  If the temperature goes to high, it will open, protecting your hot water heater from over pressurizing and exploding.  On electric hot water heaters, you have thermostats that regulate the temperature of your hot water heater.
